Senior Research Associate / Associate Scientist

Department: Discovery Biology

Location: Berkeley, CA

Company Overview

At Renasant Bio, we are driven by a simple goal: to change what’s possible for patients with kidney disease. ADPKD remains one of the most challenging areas in medicine, and we believe it requires bold thinking, rigorous science, and a team committed to doing things differently.

We’re looking for individuals who bring both scientific rigor and creativity to hard problems, and who believe great work is built through respectful, direct collaboration. You communicate with honesty and transparency, adapt quickly as priorities evolve, and hold yourself—and others—to a high standard. Above all, you operate with urgency and purpose, grounded in the knowledge that patients are waiting.

Based at Bakar Labs in Berkeley, CA, we are advancing new therapies designed to make a meaningful difference for patients.

The Role

We’re seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Senior Research Associate/Associate Scientist with a strong background in biochemical assays to join our dynamic team and contribute to building our pipeline for kidney diseases. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting our research efforts working alongside a team of scientists.

The successful candidate will lead the execution of high-resolution protein and nucleic acid analyses, bridging in vitro mammalian cell biology and in vivo tissue studies. We are looking for a versatile team member with a rigorous approach to data quality, a background in multi-modal assay development (including protein and RNA workflows), and a commitment to maintaining a safe, collaborative laboratory environment.

Major Responsibilities

  • Execute routine and complex Western blots to assess target protein expression levels across diverse biological matrices.

  • Develop and optimize protein purification, labeling and enrichment protocols to isolate protein targets and study molecular interactions.

  • Perform RNA-based assays (such as RNA extraction and RT-PCR) to validate target modulation and cellular responses.

  • Adapt and execute assays in high-throughput formats to support validation of compound activity across programs.

  • Analyze experimental results using software (such as ImageJ) and Graphpad Prism; maintain meticulous electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN).

  • Adhere to strict laboratory safety guidelines, ensure a clean and organized work environment, and contribute to development of robust, reproducible SOPs.

  • Collaborate within the Discovery Biology team to optimize assay conditions, troubleshoot technical hurdles, interpret outcomes, and ensure consistent assay reproducibility.

  • Communicate findings to support aggressive project timelines and deliverables.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field with at least 3-5 years of hands-on experience in protein biochemistry techniques. Prior biotechnology industry experience is required.

  • Proven proficiency in both protein and nucleic acid techniques. Familiarity with automated protein analysis systems, such as the ProteinSimple Jess (Simple Western) is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and refine biochemical protocols with minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Commitment to maintaining high-quality standards and adhering to laboratory safety protocols.

Senior Research Associate: $90,000 - $105,000 per year

Associate Scientist: $100,000 - $120,000 per year

Final compensation will be based on a candidate’s qualifications, experience, and geographic location. Employees are also eligible for performance bonuses, equity participation and comprehensive health benefits.
